HOW VETERINARY BEHAVIOR PRACTICE DIFFERS

Veterinary behavior practice is unique compared to general and other specialty veterinary practices. Our team is small and highly personalized, consisting of Dr. Jokela and Liz Geisen, KPA CTP, IAABC-CDBC, who serves as Dr. Jokela’s assistant, practice manager, and as our certified Behavior Modification Therapy Training Consultant.

Unlike traditional veterinary clinics, our office is designed specifically to accommodate anxious and fearful patients. We have a large consultation room to provide ample space, allowing pets to maintain a comfortable distance from unfamiliar people and move freely in a low-stress environment.

The CVBC Behavior Consultation Room

To ensure a calm and focused atmosphere, we do not have a waiting room or reception staff answering phone calls during consultations. Our full attention is dedicated to each patient.

  • If you need to reach us on the day of your pet's appointment, please call or text Liz's Work Cell 219-781-6868.

YOUR VISIT: WHAT TO EXPECT

Because our patients are often anxious, fearful, reactive, or aggressive, we have only one patient in the building at at a time and ensure that no other patients are present during your visit. However, since we are next door to an animal hospital you may encounter other pets in the parking lot.

  • Upon arrival, please call Liz’s cell at 219-781-6868 to let her know you have arrived.
  • Liz will ensure the consultation room is ready and that no other animals are in the facility before unlocking the door for your appointment.
  • For safety, our doors remain locked to maintain a controlled and secure environment.
  • In most cases, pets are allowed to move freely off-leash in the consultation room to help them feel more comfortable.

PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT

To help your pet feel more at ease during the consultation, please bring:

  • A familiar and comfortable bed or blanket to place next to a chair by the windows, where you will be seated.
  • Several long-lasting food enrichment items such as stuffed Kongs, Topples, Lickimats, or Snuffle mats. Toys are also encouraged.
  • Small, high-value treats to offer your pet throughout the session.

It is common for anxious pets to urinate or defecate during consultations, and there is no need to feel embarrassed—we understand this is a natural response to stress.

  • However, we recommend giving your dog a chance to eliminate before entering the facility.
  • You may use the grassy area in front of the plaza or the grassy area behind the dumpsters at the back of the complex.
